Turfway Park racecourse is located at the town of Florence in the state of Kentucky. It first opened its gates on 27th February 1959 when known as Latonia Race Course (not to be confused with Latonia which operated between 1883 and 1939), but switched to Turfway Park on 9th April 1986. The 8 furlong dirt track has separate 6 furlong and 10 furlong chutes, each sharing 296 metre home straight. Its principal race is the Lane's End Stakes, a Group 2 event over 9 furlongs which was first contested in 1972 when won by the Jimmy Murchison ridden Big Dot. More recent winners in 2009 and 2012 were Hold Me Back and the John Velazquez ridden Went The Day Well. Other feature races at the track are the Group 3 Bourbonette Oaks for fillies, the Vinery Spiral Stakes over 9 furlongs which was introduced on 1st April 1972, and the Group 3 Kentucky Cup Classic Handicap. The former, contested over a mile, was first run in 1983 when won by Push On ridden by James McKnight. The latter Cup Classic was first run in 1994 and was won by Tabasco Cat ridden by Pay Day. |
